Enhancing Drilling Performance with Conventional Motors by Use of Torsional Vibration Mitigation Technology

Mud motor failures persist as a primary contributor to unplanned trips and invisible lost time in drilling operations. Despite advancements in drill bit and motor driveline design, power section failures remain frequent, commonly leading to below-par drilling efficiency. Even in instances where motors avoid premature trips, the damage to the power section incurred during operation can significantly impair performance.

This talk sheds light on the often-overlooked aspect of invisible lost time associated with mud motor performance.

Variations in depth-of-cut (DOC) at the bit introduce uneven loading on the mud motor, leading to strain within the driveline and cyclic loading on the elastomer. Additionally, axial vibrations exacerbate these coupled loads on the bearing assembly, contributing to increased heat generation within the power section and accelerating wear, thus elevating the risk of chunking.

The implementation of Torsional Vibration Mitigation Technology positioned above the motor and MWD has consistently demonstrated its efficacy in maintaining a more consistent DOC. This stability directly translates to improved drilling efficiency across conventional motor Bottom Hole Assemblies (BHAs).
